Management Team

His passion for Africa and its people, and the huge potential of solar power to improve their standard of living led Thomas and his wife to found Village Power in 2013. He has been involved in various startups since completing his studies in Business Administration in Munich, Madrid and London. In 2003 he co-founded a Software Trading company and served as its CFO until exiting in 2010. He then started an Investment company founding and funding startups and is a board member of several Swiss and German companies. Thomas loves to explore the world and has visited more than 60 countries on 6 continents.

Co-Founder & CEO


Simon has more than 6 years of experience in sales and business development. Before joining Village Power, he was with Credit Suisse in Zurich and London and also worked for a family business in Caracas, Venezuela where he lived in 2008/ 2009. Simon holds a Bachelors Degree in Law and Economics from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and is also a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA). In his spare time, he proudly co-organizes Zurich’s first and finest Day Party, SANAPA.



Having been brought up with a close bond to Africa, Tanja shares the deep passion and interest for the continent and it’s people with her husband Thomas. After finishing her Masters degree in Economics, Tanja worked in the commodities business with a special focus on the energy sector. Prior to founding Village Power, Tanja held the position of global head of risk for an energy trading group. She believes firmly in integrity and transparency and incorporates these characteristics in her management approach at Village Power.

Co-Founder, Compliance, Controlling & Risk


Annie has a varied background spanning management consulting, public policy, economic development, and apparel/retail. She started her career working as an engineer in Australia before taking on a fellowship in the U.S. Senate. Annie established a research program on Off-Grid Entrepreneurship in emerging economies at WRI. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School and has worked as a consultant for Bain & Company.

Strategy and Special Projects


As Managing Director of Village Power, Ali is keen on the potential of rural electrification through solar. He values people and seeks to empower them by supporting and contributing to sustainable community development initiatives. Ali studied Business Administration and Mass Communications at Makerere University. He built a career that spans over 14 years in sales, distribution and general management. He has worked in various multinational organisations such as Airtel, East African Breweries, MultiChoice and British American Tobacco. He enjoys basketball and has previously served the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA), as Vice President. This inspired him to develop a current program that supports the Girl child through sports as a vehicle for education and sports.

Managing Director


Sumaya studied at the University of Pretoria majoring in Industrial Sociology and Labour Relations. She is a team asset with a versatile skill set. Has over 6 years experience in business management, marketing , personnel development and customer experience. Sumaya is determined towards building Village Power into a heartily rewarding experience for our customers, employees and stakeholders.

Joanita graduated from the University of Cape Town in South Africa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Prior to joining Village Power, she worked with an oilfield service company as an Operations Coordinator handling a vast number of customer projects within sub-Saharan Africa. As such, she has gained credible work experience in supply chain, project and operations management as well as customer relationship management through planning and leading critical customer projects from inception to completion yielding flawless execution of operations, customer satisfaction and exemplary service delivery.

Samuel graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Statistics (First Class Honours). He is a Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) with experience in the fields of External Audit (Financial Statements Audits and Value for Money Audits), Risk and Compliance, Treasury Management and Financial Reporting spanning over 10 years. Prior to joining Village Power he worked with UAP Old Mutual Life Assurance Uganda Limited, a subsidiary of the UAP Old Mutual Group overseeing the Finance function. He also served as Risk and Compliance Officer for two other subsidiaries within the UAP Old Mutual Group and had worked with KPMG Uganda (Certified Public Accountants) Audit department for over five years before joining the UAP Old Mutual Group.
